Below are highlights from some of our science work in fourth grade.
water cycle
Students explored erosion by experimenting with stream tables as part of their water cycle unit.
force and motion
What modifications can you make to a bobsled base to make it faster? Teams built a bobsled using a cardboard tube as a base and materials such as craft sticks, foil, wax paper, elastic bands, magnets and office clips. They tested their sleds on a bobsled track (a plastic gutter) and made modifications to increase the speed of their sleds.
Terrariums
Fourth-graders up-cycled soda bottles to begin creating eco-columns. Teams worked together to create terrariums using gravel, soil, seeds and water. They recorded their work on a table and drew diagrams of their new terrariums. After plants sprouted, they added crickets and pillbugs.
aquariums
Aquariums are the second component of the eco-columns. After starting with gravel and distilled water, teams added elodea, duckweed, algae, snails and mosquito fish to their aquariums.
